When you think of black women, what is one word that comes to your mind? I think of black women as strong and courageous as they possess constant, unwavering strength in a society that is sometimes rude to them. And as humans, black women deserve to have a break and take their time to process the complexity in our communities and daily lives. But how to start practicing self-care and live a healthy lifestyle? This kind of lifestyle is important as it entails a balance between your physical, spiritual, and emotional well-being. It will make a person healthier and happier. Here's how to live a healthier lifestyle, one step at a time.

Make a decision to start living a healthy lifestyle.

Living a healthy lifestyle won't be possible if you won't make a decision to start making better health choices. Condition yourself so you will have the willpower to achieve your goal. Keeping a journal to track your progress is also helpful in obtaining your objectives. All you need to do is start. Start purchasing healthy food, start meditating, and exercising and you can figure out the rest as you go.

Be aware of the risks you encounter.

In case you do not know, black people are at a higher risk of acquiring heart attacks and strokes than other races. And that risk is even higher if you have family members who have suffered from the same condition. So you have to be extra careful and do the right things to prevent such illnesses. It is common knowledge that fat around the waist is one of the things that can increase the risk of having a heart attack. If a woman has waist measurements of more than 35 inches, it can increase her risk of having a heart attack, stroke, and type 2 diabetes. Make the risks your reason to start living a healthy lifestyle. Exercise at least 20 to 30 minutes every day to reduce the fat around your waist.

Be active.

Exercise has a lot of health benefits including reducing the risk of diseases like heart attack and stroke. Start being active as it does many good to your body. You can start with simple steps like walking and using the stairs instead of using the elevator. You can also exercise at least 20 to 30 minutes every day so you will get used to working out daily. Making adjustments in your daily activities can help you keep yourself healthy. Stay motivated by keeping your workout fun. Listen to some upbeat songs while exercising or workout with friends or family members.

Water is essential.

We all know how important water is to our bodies. Human beings can survive up to three weeks without eating food but we can only last seven days without water. We should be drinking at least eight ounces of water daily. But remember that the amount of water intake may vary depending on the level of activity you do in a day, your physique, and the environment. But eight ounces daily is the minimum you should drink. Always carry a water bottle everywhere you go and take sips regularly so your body will be kept hydrated.

Cook your own food.

Preparing your own meal often will make you eat healthier food. When you cook your own meal, you can control what ingredients you will be using. This way, you can avoid unhealthy ingredients such as sodium nitrates/nitrites, hydrogenated oils, a.k.a trans fat, sugar, artificial flavors and colors, artificial sweeteners, and other unhealthy ingredients. Eating healthy is better than dieting. So make sure your meals consist of different kinds of vegetables, fruits, and lean meat. Keep in mind that we eat to live, we don’t live to eat.

Time to cut out unhealthy habits.

If you always drink alcohol, smoke, or do drugs, it is time to quit those dangerous habits. If you want to start living a healthy lifestyle, know that you have to make adjustments even if that means cutting out your unhealthy habits. Gradually reduce your intake of harmful substances until you totally get rid of your habits. If you think you will have a hard time doing it on your own, you can seek professional help.

This is just the first part of the healthy habits you should do to start living a healthy lifestyle.Stay tuned to know more steps you need to take to be healthier and happier.
